Did Somebody Say Catnip?

Oh meowllo. Me was just sittin’ here watchin’ Raena. Let me tell ya’ dat girl has more energy than da energizer bunny. Me knows me told ya’ dat befur, but it’s da truth. She just doesn’t stop. And me knows me’s posty is late, mommy says there’s so many fotos to edit and not enuff time in each day. Mommy did want me to address an email we got regardin’ Raena and da play pen. No, Raena does NOT live in da play pen. She weighed a pound and a half after spendin’ a week in our house and eatin’ some good groceries. She weighed much less when mommy picked her up. She was too tiny to get into da litter boxes and had spent her furst 6 weeks of life in a kitty crate, so even our small apartment was overwhelmin’ fur her. And so fur her purrtection and safety, mommy set up da play pen fur her. Me would never hurt her, but me wasn’t da happiest kitty girl in da world da day she arrived, and mommy had to go up and feed Buddy, so da play pen was da purrfect place fur her. As you can see by da bulk of da fotos, she’s got free reign of our house. We would like to thank you all fur supportin’ us and luvvin’ Raena.

Dezi lays in floor and watches Raena

Dat bein’ said, Raena discovered Dougie last night. Me doesn’t think she’s figgered out what he is or dat she ain’t ever gonna be able to get to him. Me’s sure Dougie is hopin’ dat tank is kitten proof. Anyways, mommy’s been tryin’ really hard to get at least one foto of all her “fursts”, but she was laffin’ so hard at Raena pawin’ at Dougie’s tank dat she furgot to take a picture. Let me tell ya’ Raena’s a big camera ham. She luvs havin’ her foto taken. And speakin’ of fursts, mommy has always bought da new kitty a little mousey from da pet store. Several of da pet stores carry this itty bitty mousey dat says, “my first mouse” on it. Well, since we don’t have a pet store here and da one in Ardmore has a bug purroblem so we don’t shop there; then Raena didn’t get her “my first mousey”.

Dezi eats while Raena watches

Go play Raena, me’s eatin’.

As you all noticed she is a tiny little thing, so most of our toys are too big fur her. Now don’t get me wrong, she sure ‘nuff tries to play with them, but ifin she ever gets her mouth on somethin’, she can’t move it cuz it’s too big and heavy. So after watchin’ her play dat furst night, mommy sent an email to awnty Ellen of 15 and meowing askin’ her ifin she would make Raena a little toy of her own dat would be Raena sized. Well we received said package da other day, and OMC awnty Ellen sent some of da bestest made with luv toys; and she even made Raena her very own nip mat. Well, da general rule is dat kittens aren’t affected by catnip ‘til they’re ‘bout 6 months or older. So mommy planned to take a couple of fotos of da nip mat and then put it away fur Raena till after she has her big girl surgery.

Raena bunny kicks her made with love chicken leg

Of course you all know there’s an exception to every rule. You know there are kittys out there dat don’t even like catnip. Can you believe dat? A kitty not likin’ catnip. Dat has to be a sacrilege of da kitty book of norms. Anyways, sure ‘nuff there are kittys dat never enjoy catnip. But let me tell ya’ dat ain’t RaenaBelle!!! As soon as mommy put dat nip mat down, Raena started goin’ nuts. She scooted ‘round and rolled ‘round till she found da openin’ where da nip be inserted and started droolin’. And then she found da toys and started bunny kickin’ like crazy. Oh me cats she looked so funny. She had those tiny legs just a goin’ to town and rubbin’ her cheeks all over dat toy.

Raena on her first nip mat

Hey Dezi I thought you was gonna let me tell ‘bout mines new toys. Mommy said dat I could do da tellin’.

Raena discovers cat nip in her made with lovs catnip mat

Hey Dezi, what’a this paw-mazin’ smell?

Well then get to tellin’ Raena, and don’t furget to say thank you.

Raena rolls around in her catnip mat

This is sooooooo good

Okay. Well guess I oughtta start with dat fank you. Fank you awnty Ellen, I luvs mines new toys and dat nip mat is pawsum. I’s ‘posed to be too young to understand ‘bout this catnip stuffs but let me tell ya’, dat mat and those toys smelled better than mines dinner plate. And dat’s sayin’ somethin’. I got 2 fishys, a ball, a tube and a chicky leg. And I had a blast playin’ last night. Come to think of it, I’s gonna go play right now. Fanks again. Big RaenaBelle hugs comin’ your way.

Yes, thank you awnty Ellen, those toys will keep her outta me’s fur, at least fur 5 minutes. Well me’s gonna go now and see what mischief me can find.

Dezi starts down the cat tree

Till da next time………………………………….Be Blest!!!

Do you (your kitty) like catnip?

Do you (your kitty) purrfur silvervine?

About Deziz World

My name is Deztinee. I am a Ragdoll. I was born 11/1/2009. I am a service cat along with my sisfur RaenaBelle, also a Ragdoll, for our disabled human mommy. My sisfur Raena was born 4/21/2016. In March of 2016, mommy and I had to say goodbye to my mentor Alexandra (Lexi), a black tabby born 4/29/1999. This blog is about our daily life from the kitty's point of view. We were both rescued from bad situations and our mommy raised us and trained us to be service cats. I want this blog to be interactive and get to know all of you, so comment and visit often. I will also offer advice, training tips and education when possible. 1. Thank you for sharing these photos. You are very welcome for the toys Raena- don’t forget to share with your big sister. I used dried nip from our garden in the mat and I used Purrseidon’s Preferred in the toys- that is good stuff. Love and kisses from Auntie Ellen

  2. Raena Belle is sooo cuuuute! At my house cat nip doesn’t really knot our tails until we are older, at least a year. And sometimes never! I got a couple of brofurs who aren’t into the nip. Not at all!

  3. I wonder if Ms. Ellen used a Cat-a-bliss blend in her toys and that mat…. Mr. M and Purrseidon had never been particularly interested in ‘nip until they became testers for those blends (yes, they’re part of the 50% without the gene), but they LOVED all the Cat-a-bliss blends … Mr. M’s prize possession is the little silvervine stick we got from there (I know it isn’t a blend – neither is the catnip bud Purrseidon loves to play soccer with).
Also, what is Raena learning to do to help, first? I’m looking for ideas about things the furry ones could learn to do to help out around our house.

    • We don’t know what awnty Ellen used. there was just a few little broken leaves but she went crazy wild over it. We do know she’s talked ’bout buyin’ those nip blend things tho’. As fur Raena’s training, right now mommy is more concerned with building a bond with her since she’s really too small to do very much. She is tryin’ to massage mommy’s head on her own tho’. Mommy’s happ[y ’bout dat as it would be one of her duties and da more she can pick up on her own da better. Dat means it’ll be second nature to her. We think she tried to alert mommy to a syncope incident, but we’ll have to wait and see ifin she does it every time befur we can say she does dat. She will eventually be trained to dial 911, drive da wheelchair, help me get mommy out of da shower while she’s passed out among other things. Not sure what “around da house” kinds of things you’re interested in your cats doin’?.

      • Wow! I had no idea you had so many responsibilities! I was wondering if it would be possible to teach Purrseidon and Mr. M to dust furniture or something… I thought I was doing good teaching Purr to put her toys in her basket when she was done playing!

        Liked by 1 person

        • Oh, me’s sure you could teach them to dust, but they’d do it by swooshin’ their tails, so ya’ purrobably wouldn’t want ’em doin’ it ’round your dainty breakables. Lessen ya’ could find another way to teach ’em. Mommy says trainin’ a kitty is bestest done usin’ our own instincts dat way it’s easy and we don’t think it’s unnatural, thus da tail swooshin’. MOL Anyways, good luck.

          • Hmmm… Purrseidon has taught herself to flush the toilet and turn on the kitchen faucet … we’re working on turning it off and only flushing one time. It’s best to lock the bathroom door and we certainly need to keep the lid down.

            Liked by 1 person

            • Dat’s pawsum. Mommy has to keep da screen door locked cuz me was always openin’ it and lettin’ in flies. Mommy hates bugs. MOL Cats are easily trainable ya’ just have to ‘member their size purrportunate to da task, and findin’ da way to do da task dat be most natural to them. And of course findin’ out what their favorite reward is, is mandatory. 🙂 so turnin’ dat water off is gonna require somethin’ dat pays off even more than furesh runnin’ water. MOL

              • Excellent point on finding something more rewarding that running water … Purr is obsessed with water, which has been a major training problem for us.
Since you’re obviously very good at your job, would you be interested in writing a guest blog about what you learned in order to do your job or how your training your assistant? On Tuesdays, I’ve been doing a post “Meet ____” and I’ve introducing various adventure cats, but your job is quite an adventure, too – and an important one. I know you currently have your paws full, since you’re not only doing the job alone, but also training Raena, but if you’re interested, contact me at j_foguth@yahoo.com

Until you mentioned driving the wheelchair, potential shower hazards, 911, etc. I’d assumed your job was anxiety relief…. cats’ purring is healthy, you know.
Gotta tell you, that you are very lucky not to need to train Purrseidon to pull someone out of the shower… am not sure anyone could teach her that – she does have dozens of ways to break IN when the water is running. But OUT and/or turn the water off?!? Don’t think so.

                    Liked by 1 person

                    • MOL Mommy says Purrseidon could be trained it’ll just take lots of patience and maybe a good little while. It really is ’bout findin’ dat great reward.

As fur us and purrin’, mommy says there’s nuffin’ in da world better fur a migraine than a purrin’ kitty massagin’ da head. And yes, a lot of peeps don’t know what we do and of course some don’t believe and mommy says dat’s okay. We’s not purrfurmin’ monkeys doin’ tricks fur da world we’re helpin’ her remain’ independent and live on her own as long as pawssible. We only went public and tell what we do cuz da ADA changed da rules and said only seein’ eye and rescue doffies could be certified as Service animals and thus caused us to lose some rights and benefits afforded Sevice animals and their humans. We do still enjoy some benefits, but we don;t think da law shoulda been changed and so we speak out on behalf of other species with a focus on kitties. We’ll be in touch soon.

                      Luv ya’

                    • When I hear of service animals, it is usually dogs, though I’ve also heard of pigs doing that … cats are traditionally considered to be self-centered and independent, so I suspect that one would need to be extra careful about the purrsonality of a kitten being considered to be a service cat.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Dat’s why we speak out. Those thoughts about cats aren’t true. Those are merely old wives tales and myths. Sure there are breeds dat are more aloof, but in general all kitties want to be luvved and return dat luv. And somepawdy needin’ a Service animal will bring out da nurturing side of da kitty. Dat’s why da initial trainin’ is just bonding. Mommy wants to make certain da kitty is closely bonded to her and wants to be with her at all times. From there, trainin’ get easier, so to speak. As fur things like alertin’ to illnesses or syncope or seizures, etc., all animals smell da changes in da human body, they just have to be trained to do somethin’ dat would tell da human they smell a purroblem. Again, it’s using our natural behaviors and instincts and channeling them to our humans needs. Of course there are breeds dat would naturally be purr-disposed to be good service kitties because of their purrsonalities and tempurrment. Mommy says us Ragdolls are a great choice, but so was sis Lexi and those dat came befur and durin’ her time.

                      Luv ya’

                    • IMHO, Mr. M would have made a good service cat. He is kind, patient and caring… smart, too. His early years were feral and he also tends to be a bit introverted, so I think getting the kitten bonded early is important.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Yeah, mommy tells peeps they can train a kitty they already have a bond with. But ifin they don’t have a bond with a kitty then she always recommends a kitten. Shorter attention spans means they’re willing to repeat da same actions over and over again fur longer periods of time and thus learn quicker. And you can teach them da reward is luvvin’ as opposed to treats so ya’ don;t have to keep treats on hand constantly or worry about weight.

                      Luv ya’

                    • Um… wish I’d thought of hugs vs. treats a few years ago when we found Saphera … of course, when she was found as a puppy running by the interstate, she was very afraid of most people, though liked babies (is still gaga over them) and women. After all these years, I doubt she’ll ever trust men, but with treats, she’ll put her head in the lap of our disabled neighbor — he is a very dear man, whose entire month was ‘made’ when she did that.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Dat’s very sweet. And yes, most peeps think of treats as a reward, but mommy can’t move in da meowning’s and there’s really no where to keep treats in da shower, so she had to find a better reward than food. A;; animals luv being luvved so our reward has always been extra luv and cooin’ from mommy. Da more she coo’s da more we wanna do fur her. We got an occasional treat, but it was generall at da end of a trainin’ day, so it’s kinda’ like a kids midnight snack. Ya’ know, day’s over, no more workon’ or eatin’ till da next day.

                      Luv ya’

                    • Whenever I hear/read advice about training pets, they suggest treats. Granted, this seems to work particularly well for dogs – my husband often jokes that dogs are a support system for their stomach… he does have a point.
One somewhat unrelated question: Other service animals I know wear a vest when they are working, and I know to treat them differently, but you two must always be on the job, is that why I’ve never noticed you wearing a vest in your photos?

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Yeah, dogs and cats are 2 totally different animals and dogs are ruled by their tummies. Yet another reason peeps think cats can’t be trained because so many cats don’t like treats or won’t take them from just anypawdy.

As fur vests, we don’t wear them at home and we’re here most of da time. Me’s vest broke a couple of years ago and mommy couldn’t afford to buy another one so one of our facebook awnties bought me just a regular harness and mommy attached me’s name plate and creds to it. But we are generally inside our stroller when we are out and about so as long as da stroller states our purrpuss then we’re all good. Certifying a service animal isn’t mandatory so da vests are just a way fur most of those companies to make money. Ifin mommy was more like awnty Ellen and could DIY, she would make me a vest/harness. When da ADA changed da rules so dat only da two classes of dogs were allowed we wished they had instead made it a rule dat Service animals had to be certified. This would have done away with da companion and pet purrtenders dat were causin’ da purroblems. But yes, it’s a money thing mostly why we don’t wear vests when we’re outside of da house.

                      Luv ya’

                    • Purrseidon, Mr. M and Saphera all wear harnesses when they are outside -exception = our fenced in back yard. We also require Purrseidon to wear a life vest when she is near water & since she can’t seem to tell the difference between the tub, her wading pool and the Atlantic Ocean, we generally require he to wear it in her pool, too.
The three of them all seem to behave a bit more ‘properly’ when they have their harness on, so I’ve always wondered if the vests were for the animal to know when they were working or for others to know.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • It’s a little of both. When me has me’s harness on me’s a little more fearless and serious. But me will also gladly play ifin mommy says it’s okay. Me’s original vest was just a harness with a logo. Dependin’ on da tyoe of service da animal is purrvidiin’ there’s also da leash or “gear” attached to da harness.vest dat causes an animal to act differnetly and know they are on duty. But at da end of da day, a Service animal is kinda always on duty. Even when playin’ we are at da ready. Glad to hear your bunch is purrtected when they go outside.
