Service Cats: How To Stop Kitty’s Cord Chewing

MeOW and welcome to Service Cat Monday. We seem to be gettin’ later and later with our posts. All me can meow is that it’s gettin’ colder and we still don’t have a wheelchair, so we’re doin’ the bestest we can. Mommy’s been a bit unner the weather lately, but never fear, Raena and me are takin’ real good care of her. Anyways, let me get the business outta the way and we’ll get on with today’s posty. The followin’ post will be written in human English fur reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat Monday posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Trainin’ Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal trainin’, cats in purrticular. And to offur insight into your questions about Feline Behavior. Ifin you have any questions or topics you would like us to cover, purrlease let us know in the comments section or send us an email. When asking behavioral questions, purrlease be as specific as pawssible. And, ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ the links at the end of this post. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

Today we thought we’d talk a bit about chewing. This is something most dog owners are intimately familiar with, but only affects a small percentage of cats. Dogs never seem to outgrow their need to chew on things. Us kitties on the other hand, don’t usually find your stinky shoes appetizing. There’s a big difference between stinky goodness and the stench coming from your old sneakers. So, what do we kitties find interesting to chew you ask? Well, that cord draped from your desk to the outlet that connects you computer to the almighty power sure does look enticing. So does that cord that connects your monitor to the computer, or the one that charges your phone, tablet or other digital device.

Dangling Cords

Yes, dogs seem to chew based on scent or sensation, but we kitties chew based on a response to Hunt, Catch, Kill. A dangling cord might look motionless to you, but we see the slightest movement caused by a shift in the air, or the slight shaking of your desk or table. We can’t help that our tail appendage just happened to touch the cord and cause it to sway as we passed by. But, that slight movement awakens our need to “Hunt, Catch and Kill”.

Kitties can also chew because of frustration or boredom. Generally, we still chew things like cords or small dangly items like curtain tassels, rug tassels, etc.. Why do you think we like wand toys so much? MOL There are exceptions to every rule. Raena likes to bite and chew metal and porcelain objects. Mommy finds this very frustrating herself, as these objects are extremely hard and could cause tooth breakage. But, let’s be honest, cord chewing isn’t any safer. The teeth might not break because of it, but kitty could get electrocuted or worse.

Electrical Tape in 6 colors

Electrical tape comes in fashionable colors as well as black

So, how do you get kitty to stop chewing? The good news is, that most cats grow out of this behavior. In the meantime, wrap cords in cord protectors when possible. There are many products on the market that are designed to dissuade kitty, but mommy says she never found them very effective. And in some cases they were a bit sticky and she feared they could cause bugs. Not something mommy ever wants to encourage. The one thing Mommy has found to be helpful is electrical tape. Electrical tape is an inexpensive fix to keep kitty from chewing on cords that must dangle for whatever reason. It even comes in colors these days. Although, mommy still prefers basic black. Just be sure to wrap the cord from the base of the plug to the base of the device it powers. In all of her years with fosters and resident kitties, she’s never had one chew a cord wrapped in electrical tape. You can also try hiding or blocking kitty’s access to as many cords as possible with furniture. Remove all tassels and fringed items. This step should only be temporary.

 Fabric Electric Cord covers

Fabric covers, easily made by sewing a seam in one side of a

piece of fabric cut a few inches longer and wider than

the cord it’s covering.

Electrical cord covers

But, for those cats who chew out of boredom, electrical tape and removal of enticing items won’t be the only fix needed. So, Redirect, Redirect, Redirect. As soon as kitty starts chewing, firmly say NO, and get a wand toy or throw kitty’s favorite toy their way. IN KITTY’S DIRECTION, NOT AT THEM!!! The startle will be enough to stop kitty from chewing and get them to investigate the toy. Remember, spray bottles and water dousing doesn’t work. We know several of you just disagreed with us based on your own experiences. And while it might work a time or two, the damage it does in the long run isn’t worth it. Not to mention, kitty will eventually get used to getting doused and ignore it. Besides, spray bottles and dousings are for the lazy kitty owner who isn’t interested in learning why kitty is doing what they’re doing and helping them. You can also try some of the electric interactive toys on the market. We have several that will turn on intermittently throughout the day. Of course, they don’t work so well when kitty learns how to turn them on and off themselves, but hey, at least kitty isn’t bored. MOL You might also look into getting kitty a friend.

Brown Dog clip art

While we’re a kitty blog and focus mainly on feline behavior, we try to help all our friends whenever possible. We mentioned that dogs are incessant chewers. You’re not likely to stop your dog from chewing, but you can provide appropriate chew toys. Keep your shoes, clothes, remotes, phones, and other enticing items out of doggy’s reach. Keep closet doors shut, invest in a remote/phone caddy and Redirect, Redirect, Redirect. If doggy gets hold of an off limits item, immediately remove it (use basic training command: Drop It) and replace it with an appropriate chew toy. Again, there are tons of them on the market, from chew sticks to teething ropes, etc..

email dreaming cat clip art

Well we hope we’ve helped those of you who might be dealing with cord chewers. We got a similar question about fabric chewing that we’ll cover next week. These are two completely different behaviors. And remember, ifin you have any questions or topics you’d like us to cover, leave them in the comments or send us an email. Blest Sunday: National Cat Day

MeOW Raena? Why is it that you think you need to take up the whole bed?

Dezi lays atop the liberty cat tree while Raena stands sniffing at the shelf

Meeee? What ‘bout you? Stretchin’ out and givin’ me the old whacky paw while I’s tryin’ to sleep?!!

Sleep? You scratched me while givin’ mommy a massage.

Well sissy, ifin you weren’t takin’ up the whole bed, you wouldn’t have gotten scratched.

Dezi looks at Raena from atop the liberty cat tree

That doesn’t even make any sense Raena. Have you been on the nip already this meownin’?

Girls, Be Nice. I need both of you next to me when I sleep. You know I can’t sleep without ya’. Now apologize and let’s get to your Blest Sunday posty.

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

Sorry mommy. Sorry Raena. Mommy’s right, we need to get to our Blest Sunday post. We’re blest to have a bed to lay on and stretch out on. We’re blest to have a furever home full of luv. We’re blest to have furiends and family that luv and suppurrt us.

Dezi and Raena laying on the bed

I’s sorry too, sissy. We are very Blest. Hey, did you see mommy’s calendar? It says today is National Cat Day. I’s thought every day was Cat Day, so I’s pawed in to google and found out that National Cat Day started in 2005 to bring awareness to all the homeless kitties in the world. And, of course, to celebrate the luvs of a cat.

Dezi lays on the brown cat tree in front of the window

That’s true Raena. Me was just meowin’ ‘bout how Blest we are. There are thousands upon thousands of kitties who will never know the luv of a human or the warmth of their very own bed. Some will never even know the feelin’ of a full tummy. It makes us so sad to think ‘bout those kitties less furtunate than us. As most peeps know, we’re a purretty poor family when it comes to the green papers. But, we are teemin’ with luv. Ya’ know, me’s birthday is Wednesday. 7 years ago me was a sickly kitty who purrobably would have died ifin not fur mommy. We wish every kitty could have a luvvin’ furever home. There’s so much that can be done to help these kitties. Even ifin ya’ don’t have green papers.

Raena lays in house on liberty cat tree

Even mommy can take a decent foto every once in a while. MOL

Sure ‘nuff sissy. You can volunteer at a shelter or rescue, donate old towels, sheets, toys, cleanin’ supplies, food and so much more. Maybe, you’re good with the camera. You don’t have to be a purrfessional, just willin’ to donate a little time to take a few fotos of kitties waitin’ in shelters to be posted online. A good foto is worth a thousand words. And, it just might be the thing that helps get that kitty adopted. Or maybe ya’ got some energy to burn and can spend some time just playing with and socializin’ some kitties. A confident kitty stands a far better chance of getting’ adopted than one who cowers in their pawtty box.

Don’t furget those of us in social media Raena. We can all share, share and share some more. Ya’ never know who might see that post. Me knows mommy plans to spend some extra time with us today, just like she does every day. She says we celebrate cat day every day and she wouldn’t change it fur the world.

Blest kitties are we, sissy. I’s think you have a fanky fank ya’ to meow out too sissy.

Me sure does, Raena. Me wants to fank awnty Vonda fur sendin’ some green papers fur me’s birthday. Mommy says we need food and litter most, so she’s gonna put those green papers with hers to get us some. Awnty Vonda said that was fine, so long as mommy got us some special somethin’ with some of those green papers. So, mommy got us a new throw fur the bed. It’s soft and cozy warm. Fank you very much. And fank you all fur bein’ our furiends. Don’t furget to take a minute today and every day to give thanks fur the blessings in your life.

Chatting Cats: After Dark #ChewyInfluencer

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. I’s know we’ve been meowin’ a lot ‘bout food lately; but let me tell ya’, you’d be surpurrised how good food tastes when you can smell it. And, when ya’ don’t have a lot of drainage goin’ on. I’s so fluffy that to look at me, you’d think I was gettin’ purrlenty of groceries. And truth is, mommy was puttin’ purrlenty on mine’s plate, it just wasn’t goin’ in mine’s tummy. Mommy was truly worried ‘bout how skinny I’s was. But, not anymore.

Dezi watching Raena while they eat

That’s the truth Raena. You can put away more groceries than a 16 year old sports playin’ boy. How many servings did you have last night?

Dezi and Raena get close over the TikiCat box

Sissy…you’s had just as much as I’s did. Anyways, I’s here today to meow ‘bout the TikiCat After Dark noms we tried this month from Chewy.

Raena sniffs the box of TikiCat After Dark cat food.

Dezi looks at Raena while she sticks her nose in the TikiCat box

We tried several varieties includin’ the chicken and quail egg. They ain’t kitten ya’ when they say “quail egg”.

Raena looks up to the counter where a plate of TikiCat chicken and quail egg sit

MOL  Oh Raena, that was so funny. Mommy opened the can and took one look and kind’a stirred it ‘round, and then she laffed too. There’s a half a quail egg in there. They couldn’t even give us the whole egg.

Raena licks the broth from the TikiCat chicken and quail egg food

I’s don’t think it would’a mattered sissy. I’s took a few licks and walked away. I’s had already turned mine’s nose up to the chicken and duck and chicken and pork, and the half of a quail egg wasn’t any more appetizin’. I’s sure there are some kitties out there that would luvs the Tiki Cat After Dark, but I’s ain’t that kitty.

Dezi tries the TikiCat cat food

It’s okay Raena, we can’t like everythin’. We do know there are kitties who would like it. Sis Lexi used to scarf her TikiCat down like there was no tomorrow. Ifin she were still here, she’d be givin’ it 4 paws up. There’s a few ingredients mommy doesn’t care fur, so all in all, we’d give the TikiCat After Dark noms 1 paw up. The furst three ingredients of all the flavors are quality proteins. There’s purrlenty of broth in each can fur the liquid luvvin’ or liquid deprived kitties, and they are high in protein. We learned that’s a good thing for CKD kitties and kitties needin’ to gain a few pounds.

Raena lats in front of the plate of TikiCat chicken and quail egg

While we might not care fur these noms, we do luvs our Chewy. They have lots of great purroducts fur all your furry, feathered, scaled and even furless family members. And, speedy furee shippin’ on all orders of $49.00 or more and flat rate speedy shippin’ on all other orders. They have an auto ship purrogram that let’s you save an additional 5% and makes sure you never run outta your anipal’s favorites. Don’t worry, you can skip, cancel or delay at any time. And there’s a toy with every box. MOL

Dezi looks down at the TikiCat box

You need to be clear Raena. The box is the toy you’re meowin’ ‘bout. Let’s go play. We also wanna remind everypawdy we have a give away goin’ on right now that you can enter here. And, we wanna meow a meowsy big ConCats to Truffle and Brulee of Sweet Purrfections. They won that amazin’ Frisco Cat Scratcher from Chewy. Don’t worry, we have yet another pawsum Chewy give away comin’ up next week. On me’s birthday no less.

Fanky fanks fur remindin’ everypawdy sissy. Let’s go play.
